Opened on November 22, 1989, the Mirage has been regarded as a leader in Las Vegas Strip's transformation at a time when the local gambling and tourism industries had been declining since the 1970s. Steve Wynn, the visionary founder of the Mirage and several well known casinos, purchased the exclusive right to the Mirage name from La Mirage Casino and Mirage Motel, paying each $250,000 to change their names. The exterior, the atrium and the pools have been lavishly installed with palm trees, water features, and other rainforest flora, with many statues, predominantly dolphins'. An artificial volcano in front of the resort "erupts" nightly on the hours. A pina colada fragrance is added to the natural gas stream used for the fire. The accompanying soundtrack includes sounds of actual volcano eruption. The hotel's distinctive gold windows get their color from actual gold dust used in the tinting process. The 53-foot-long, 8-foot-tall aquarium behind the registration desk is home to nearly 1000 specimens. The Mirage building is in a Y-shape design, a concept that was later copied by Las Vegas' Treasure Island, Monte Carlo, and Mandalay Bay, among others. The resort includes the Siegfried & Roy's Secret Garden and Dolphin Habitat which hosts dolphins and rare white tigers and white lions. "Love", a Cirque du Soleil theatrical production involves remixes of The Beatles. "Bare", a poolside adult-only lounge allows female toplessness. On March 7, 2000, MGM Grand Inc. acquired Wynn's Mirage Resorts, for $4.4 billion. Original cost to build the resort was $630 million.
