Originario de las regiones montañosas del Tíbet, Mongolia, Nepal, Bután y el norte de China, el yak ha sido una pieza clave en la vida de los pueblos que habitan estas áreas, tanto como animal de carga, fuente de alimento, abrigo y transporte. También existen poblaciones domesticadas y, en menor número, yaks salvajes, estos últimos más grandes y robustos. Este imponente mamífero puede llegar a pesar entre 300 y 1.200 kg, dependiendo de si es salvaje o doméstico, y su tamaño puede alcanzar hasta 2 metros de longitud y una altura de 1,6 metros a la cruz. Una de sus características más notables es su espeso pelaje largo y lanoso, que lo protege del frío extremo, así como su gran resistencia a la altitud, ya que puede vivir cómodamente a más de 4.000 metros sobre el nivel del mar, donde muchas otras especies no sobreviven. Sus narinas pequeñas, su corazón grande y sus glóbulos rojos especialmente adaptados lo hacen un verdadero maestro de la adaptación. Además de su capacidad de carga, el yak proporciona leche rica en grasa, carne, cuero y lana, siendo crucial para la subsistencia de comunidades tibetanas y nómadas. Su estiércol seco se utiliza incluso como combustible en zonas donde la leña escasea. En cuanto a su comportamiento, los yaks domésticos son tranquilos, sociales y resistentes, mientras que los salvajes pueden ser territoriales y agresivos si se sienten amenazados. Son herbívoros rumiantes, alimentándose de pastos de alta montaña, líquenes y musgos. Actualmente, mientras que el yak doméstico está extendido y no se considera amenazado, el yak salvaje está clasificado como vulnerable por la UICN debido a la caza y pérdida de hábitat. El yak no solo representa una especie biológicamente fascinante, sino también un símbolo cultural y espiritual en el Tíbet, apareciendo en festividades, leyendas y textiles.
