Para 1591 y como consecuencia de la guerra contra los indígenas chichimecas la ciudad estaba casi deshabitada y vivían aproximadamente 300 personas... Ante esa situación y para combatir a los chichimecas, 1,750 indígenas tlaxcaltecas fueron enviados a poblar Saltillo y fundaron el barrio de San Esteban de Nueva Tlaxcala. Para el año 1794 los indígenas tlaxcaltecas habitantes de Saltillo solicitaron al Obispo la construcción de una iglesia para venerar a la Virgen de Guadalupe y para tal fin se construyó un templo. En Saltillo hay varios museos que pueden visitarse: el Museo del Desierto, el Museo de la Batalla de la Angostura, el Museo del Normalismo, el Museo de la Revolución Mexicana, el Museo del Casino de Saltillo, el Museo del Sarape, el Museo de las Aves, el Museo de los presidentes Coahuilenses, etc. En Saltillo también hay tours para explorar lugares con fósiles de dinosaurios...
